Chateau Marmont is the hotel where “SOME WHERE”(2010) directed by Sofia Coppola was used as the movie  and  is famous as purveyor to celebrities in Hollywood. 

Cleo(Elle Fanning) visits long parted her father Johnny Marco(Stephen Dorff) who is a Hollywood star and  feels of emptiness, the movie portraits a moment between a father and a daughter, a parent and a child.

The film I have seen first in Sofia’ works is “Lost in Translation”(2003) which is set in Tokyo. I guess the film was directed from foreigners’ view.

I feel both movies portrait Sofia’s own. The most impressive part is the scene which Charlotte(Scarlett Johansson) views Tokyo through the glass, sitting on the window frame in the room of the hotel she stays in “Lost in Translation”. In this scene, I feel a sense of distance, it is difficult to describe, but it expresses not only her feeling but also the city of Tokyo well.

I think she has a good taste, specially in music. The sound track of “Lost in Translation” is on sell but unfortunately the other one of “SOME WHERE” is not on sell because of the copyright.

If I ask one question to her,

「Did you make the cover of the sound track “Lost in Translation” while being conscious of “The Goldberg Variations” by Glenn Gould?」

Scarlett Johansson is lying down bending her elbow at 90 degrees and wearing a “white” tank top on the cover in the sound track Lost in Translation. Glenn Gould is bending his elbow at 90 degrees and wearing a “black” suit on the cover in Goldberg Variations. It is like black-and-white inverted. And in a part of SOME WHERE, Johnny plays Goldberg Variations by the piano.  

シャトー・マーモントはソフィア・コッポラ監督の映画「SOMEWHERE」(2010年製作)の舞台になったホテルで、ハリ ウッドのセレブ御用達のホテルとしても有名だ。どこか空虚さを感じているハリウッドスター、ジョニー(スティーブン・ドーフ)の元に、疎遠だったその娘クレオ(エル・ファニング)が訪れ、父と娘、親子のひと時が描かれている。

私がはじめて観たソフィア監督の映画は、東京を舞台にした「Lost in Translation」(2003年製作)。外国の人が見た東京といった映画だろうか。私はどちらの映画もソフィア監督自身を描いていると感じている。特に印象に残っているのは、Lost in Translationで、シャーロットがホテルの部屋の窓枠に座ってガラス越しに東京を眺めているシーン。

あの何とも形容し難い距離感、彼女の感覚だけでなく東京という都市もとても良く表現していると思う。

彼女のセンス、特に音楽に関するものは素晴らしいと思う。Lost in Translationのサウンドトラックは発売されているが、残念ながらSOMEWHEREは著作権が難しく発売ができなかったそうだ。もし私がソフィア監督に一つ質問をするなら、

「Lost in Translationのサウンドトラックの表紙は、グレン・グールドのゴルドベルク変奏曲の表紙を意識してつくったのですか?」

Lost in Translationのサウンドトラックの表紙はスカーレット・ヨハンソンが白いタンクトップを着て肘を90度曲げてベットに寝転んでいる。グレン・グールドのゴルドベルク変奏曲の表紙は黒のジャケットを着たグールドが肘を90度に曲げているからだ。まるで白黒反転。そしてゴルドベルク変奏曲はSOMEWHEREで主人公のジョニーが劇中にピアノで演奏している。
